WHY THE WORLD FEELS BROKEN

Text: Genesis 3

Introduction:

  • The higher something rises, the greater the crash when it falls.”
  • Creation was lofty:
  1. The world was magnificent in design.
  2. Humanity was glorious in the image of God.
  3. Angels were majestic in reflecting God’s glory.
  • Yet the higher the place, the more devastating the fall. That explains why the world feels so broken today.

I. Because We Are a Fallen People ( Genesis 3:1-7 )

  1. The diabolical plot against the image bearers

  • The serpent’s deception wasn’t random—it was strategic.
  • Satan went after the crown jewel of creation: the image-bearers of God.
  1. The temptations that deceived the image bearers

  • “Did God really say?” — twisting God’s word.
  • The fruit was pleasing to the eye and desirable for wisdom — appealing to pride and independence.
  • 1 John 2:16–17  “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.”
  1. The consequences that plague the image bearers

  • The image of God is now marred and diminished.
  • Relationships — once perfect and harmonious — are now filled with blame, conflict, and shame.

II. Because We Live in a Fallen World

  1. Evidence in creation itself

  • Natural disasters, disease, decay — creation groans
  • Romans 8:22  “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now.”
  1. Evidence in human depravity

  • Much of the brokenness we see is caused by human rebellion against God’s image.
  • Examples: From Cain’s murder of Abel to Hitler’s Holocaust — evil runs deep when people reject God.
  1. Evidence in fallen angels ( Genesis 3:1 , 14-15 )

  • Satan and demonic forces still oppose God and His people.
  • Their mission: to attack, deceive, imprison in sin, and destroy the image bearers

III. Because of the Curse of Sin

  • Pain, toil, brokenness, and death entered the world through sin. This is why the world feels broken; sin has infected everything.

IV. The Cure of the Curse–Our Savior Jesus Christ

  1. Jesus defeats sin and death through the cross and resurrection

  • At the cross, He disarmed the powers of evil
  • Colossians 2:15  “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him.”
  • At the resurrection, He declared victory over death and offered eternal life to all who believe.
  1. Jesus empowers believers to overcome darkness and restore the image of God

  • His victory extends to us.
  • Through His Spirit, we resist temptation, preach the gospel, heal, restore, and stand against evil.
  • The image of God is being renewed in us day by day
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18  “We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
  1. The Ultimate hope

  • Our sin brings the curse, but our Savior demolishes its power.
  • Romans 5:12  “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned.”
  • Romans 5:18–19  “So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is justification leading to life for everyone. For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
  • One day, the curse will be fully lifted and creation will be restored.
  • Revelation 22:3  “and there will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him.”

V. Conclusion

  • Why does the world feel so broken? Because people are fallen, creation is fallen, angels are fallen, and sin brings a curse.
  • But there is a cure: Jesus Christ, who crushed the serpent, broke the curse, and restores the image of God in His people.
  • “In Adam, all fell. In Christ, all can rise again.”
  • Acknowledge the brokenness in your life.
  • Trust the Savior who bore the curse for you.
  • Live in the power of the Spirit to push back against the darkness until He comes again.
