Text: 1 Matthew 6:9-13
“Pray, then, in this way:‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. ‘Give us this day [e]our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from [f]evil. [g][For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]
-
Praise
- Prayer is between you and God. We don’t require an earthly intermediary
- “Our Father”
- Reverence for all God is and does
-
Respond
- Unity and Love
- Intentionality
-
Ask
- ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
- Consider Matthew 7: 7-11
- Now and the future
- Implied obedience (God’s will, not our own)
- ‘Give us this day [e]our daily bread.
- Give – We rely on God
- Us/Our – Not just me but those with me
- This Day – Not tomorrow or a month’s supply, but daily dependence
- Daily – Renewed need each sunrise
- Bread – Not luxury, but a need. Yet one that nourishes and fills
- Consider Matthew 6:25-34
- ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
- Acknowledging our debts/need for forgiveness
- “And” – Connecting our need for forgiveness to our need for daily bread
- Knowing what we have been forgiven reminds us to forgive
- Consider Matthew 18: 21-35
- ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from [f]evil.
- We are “prone to wander”
- Rightfully assessing our enemy
-
Yield
- For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
- Not found in the earliest manuscripts
- Found in the Didache and the majority of later manuscripts
- Aligns with 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 and many Psalms
- The Lord’s Prayer is a model
