Praying Like Jesus Part 1

Text: 1 Matthew 6:9-13

  1. Our approach to prayer

  • Sincerely- Not Hypocritically vs 5        
  • Secretly- Not Showy   vs. 6      
  • Specifically-not empty, meaningless repetition vs 7    

  1.  Praise

  • Pray to our Father vs. 9
  • Pray for the Lord’s name to be honored vs. 9
  • a. The names of God
  • i. Foundational Names
  1. Elohim– “God” (Creator, powerful one)
  2. YHWH (Yahweh / Jehovah) – “I AM” (self-existent, covenant-keeping God)
  3. Adonai – “Lord” (Master, ruler)
  • ii. Relational Names;
  1. Jehovah Jireh – “The Lord Will Provide” (Gen. 22:14)
  2. Jehovah Rapha – “The Lord Who Heals” (Ex. 15:26)
  3. Jehovah Tsidkenu – “The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jer. 23:6)
  • iii.  Descriptive names:
  1. Rock (Deut. 32:4) – Stable, unchanging
  2. Fortress  (Ps. 18:2) – Protector
  3. Deliverer – Rescuer

  1.  Pray with Reverence - Holiness of God (reverence)

  • Psalm 99:9  “Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.”
  • Hebrews 5:7  “During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.”

  • Is There a Sin to Confess?
  • Is There a Task to Accomplish?
  • Is There a Word to Obey?
  • Is There A Wrong to Right?
  • Common Hindrances to Prayer
  • Lack of Faith - James 1:6–7  “But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord,”
  • Ignoring God’s will - 1 John 5:14 “This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
  • Walking in disobedience - 1 John 3:22  “and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands and do what is pleasing in his sight.”
  • Disunity with others - 1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker partner, showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”

  1.  Are you ready and willing to Praise and Respond to your Father in Heaven

  • A faithful prayer-life includes doesn’t happen by accident.
  • A set time
  • A set place
  • A set plan
