God Who Dwells In Me

Text: John 7:37-7:39

I. Who is the Holy Spirit?

  • The Spirit is God Himself –  not a lesser being or impersonal force.
  • He is called another Helper  (Paraclete) – “another of the same kind”
  • John 14:16  “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.”
  • He can be grieved, showing His personality.
  • Ephesians 4:30  “And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption.”
  • He dwells within believers   – you are God’s temple.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19  “Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,”

II. What Does the Holy Spirit Do for Believers?

  • He regenerates – new birth.  Without Him, there is no true Christian life.
  • John 3:5–8  “Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.””
  • He assures – testifies we belong to God
  • Romans 8:15–16  “For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,”
  • He sanctifies – produces Christlike character
  • 1 Corinthians 6:11  “And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
  • He teaches & reminds – leads us into truth.
  • John 14:26  “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.”
  • He empowers prayer – helps when words fail.
  • Acts 1:8  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

III. What Can the Holy Spirit do through Believers?

  • “If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95% of what we do would go on and no one would know the difference. If the Holy Spirit had been withdrawn from the New Testament church, 95% of what they did would stop and everybody would know the difference.” Today we’re going to rediscover the Holy Spirit’s work in us and through us.  (A.W. Tozer )
  • He empowers witness - boldness to share Jesus.
  • Acts 1:8  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
  • He gives gifts – equipping each believer to build up the church
  • He provides the Fruit of the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:22–23  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.”
  • He produces love & unity
  • Ephesians 4:3  “making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
  • “Come, Holy Spirit, and fill us anew.”
