The Transfiguration of the King

Matthew 17:1-13

I. Jesus Reveals His Glory

Matthew 17:1–2  “1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light.”
John 1:14  “14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Hebrews 1:3  “3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

II. Jesus Is Greater Than Everyone

Matthew 17:3–4  “3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.””
John 5:39  “39 You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.”

III. God Commands Us To Listen To Jesus

Matthew 17:5  “5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!””
Three Statements From the Father
1. “This is my beloved Son.”
Jesus is uniquely God's Son.
2. “With whom I am well-pleased.”
Jesus perfectly pleases the Father.
3. “Listen to him!”
Jesus has complete authority
This is the Father's command.

IV. Jesus Meets Us In Our Fear

Matthew 17:6–7  “6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified. 7 Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.””

V. Jesus Leads Us From The Mountain To The Mission

Matthew 17:9–13  “9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 So the disciples asked him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 “Elijah is coming and will restore everything,” he replied. 12 “But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.”
Matthew 16:24  — “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”
